As the proud new owner of a SDR1000 100watt radio, I thought I would share some initial observations.

My setup comprises of;
SDR1000 with 100watt pa
Yaesu MH-31 fist mike
Pc - Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 1GB RAM, Windows Xp
Edirol FA-66
PowerSDR 1.6.3
N8VBcom driver
VAC 4.03 driver

This station is amazing, I have been using an Icom IC7000 and previously a Yaesu FT897 and previously receive on 80 & 160m has been impossible due to high QRN. The SDR obliterates all the noise and I can hear (and see via the panadaptor) stations I never knew existed. I really thought the IC7000 was good with its IF DSP and bandpass tuning, but initial observations show that the SDR leaves the IC7000 a lame duck. I am actually quite shocked at how good it is.

On the negative side I find the front face fan of the SDR quite noisy, I haven't been able to get the VOX to work at all and the SDR1000 is set for the USA ham bands, I really want the UK spectrum. I will take any advice on these points..

My overall impression is that the radio is quite awesome in capability and receive performance. I can't wait to get test the transmit side of the radio.

Further to my last post, I have now got the VOX working. It was always working - I just didn't have it configured correctly.

The link to the mod to reduce fan noise is something I'm contemplating.

No replies yet re source code to modify 'out of band' settings so I can align the radio to the UK spectrum. Any takers?

I'm going to set up my second Flex in a couple days.  I got rid of first due to fan noise and pc fan noise.  However, this time I have a more powerful PC and I was told the fan was not needed for ssb.  We will see.  Have you done anything to quiet yours?  I saw a suggesting which I guess involves drilling out some of the case metal.

Re the last post, no I haven't done any mods to the radio regarding the fan noise. The radio is still only a few weeks old and I haven't wanted to modify hardware at this point - just in case there is an issue and then I end up with warranty problems.

However, the fan noise is something I have adjusted to and it isn't as bothersome as it was. I don't know what is meant on the last post by "I was told the fan was not needed for ssb" as on my radio the fan is on all the time in all modes.

Eric has emailed me regarding the source code and I am trying to get my head around that!

If you want to see a bit of a blog and some pictures of my particular setup, have a look here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/m.rabel/sdr.html
