Hi Group,

Wondering if anyone has done any side by side comparisons with the Flex 5000 on VHF/UHF with say a Icom 910H or 9100 or transverter on weak signals? Just curious to what kind of receive reports people are giving on the receive side.

Thanks,
Chad

I would like to know as well, also how well it would integrate with Satellite operations ..

Thanks

I have been using the vu5 70cm module for Eme, plays just as good as any transverter  once a preamp is put in front of it.

The VU5 has a 2db noise figure because of the complicated switching internal to the radio , once that is connected to a preamp the NF is likely .5 or less

Terrestrial noise is higher than that so im not sure going below .5 db will buy you anything.

The new DEMI stuff starts in the .5-.6 NF level , adding a preamp brings down  the NF but again it it buying you anything??

The stand alone rigs are fine ,  2 faults the older units have    , the inability  to deal with overload by strong signals and sensitivity.

A true test is park your radio very close ( 5-10 kc's ) to a s9 local signal , you can generally feel the radio's alc/agc   being "pumped" by the strong  signal,

the VU5 is almost a brick wall compared to older radios in most cases.
