I would like to have someone post or point to a step by step guide on how to interface the FLEX-1500, DM780 and the HRD Logbook. I have tried to follow the chunks of instruction at this point but get nowhere in the end. For example don't just say or show COM20 but what did you do to have that appear - so far I am unable to add a COM port or find where to do so.
Same step by step instructions are needed for Fldigi as well
Thanks (and sorry if you thought they were already here)

Rich,
First of all, you need to run one of the virtual com port programs to create these virtual ports. There a couple of these available for free in the internet. Try looking for Com()port. Once these are running, your drop down menus in the programs will "see" these new virtual ports.
I have been thinking of trying to put together some how-to instructions for doing the VAC/third party connections. Operating PSK31 or SSTV with DM780, for example, requires running and setup of about five programs running at once: PSDR 2.07; VAC 4.09; virtual com port program; HRD or substitute intermediary: and DM780. Pretty complex. Frankly, I am hopeful that the improved PSDR software that Flex is working on will eliminate some of this complexity. Clearly, the temporary system for treating the F1500 as if it were a sound card is hopefully, well, only temporary. One problem I have with writing an instruction set is that, while I am running DM780 and WSPR successfully now, I still am having trouble myself using my favorite SSTV program, MMSSTV. When I figure that out (I will be posting my issues on the FlexEdge reflector shortly), I will be in a better position to evaluate the job of writing up a how-to.
So, the simple truth is that the F1500 still requires a lot of learning before we can make it do what we want it to do.

Thanks, I would be very happy just to run PSK31 for the moment. Any system would be good but with five years of contacts in DM780 and the log it would be best if I could interface to that.
One step at a time is find but very hard to find those first steps...

Actually, if you start out with a simpler configuration and setup something like Fldigi to get a better fundamental understanding of how all the parts fit together, then changing it to use DM780 is a lot more intuitive.
Check out this KB article on how to setyp Fldigi

Tim,
I gave that a try a couple of weeks ago without success, but let me try again today and I will report if and where I have problems.

While I am in limbo waiting for my email to download VAC (not version 4.10 where BTW it asks for you to test the free version and the article says do not do that...) I now realize why I did not go down that path very far...
1. b. Flex Firewire driver - can't find it, is it now built into PowerSDR?
1. c. release version link dead - but found it with google
That is all the further I can go while waiting for VAC

Yes.

I assume you are referring to PowerSDR 2.x. It is standard practice to only keep the current and one revision back of beta versions of PowerSDR. They are being updated every two weeks now. Check the Downloads page on the web site or join the FlexEdge reflector for beta software announcements.

No, 1. c. refers to the release version of Fldigi and that link is dead I am using SDR 2.0.8 (and let me know it is not easy to find the latest versions - a direct link on the home page would be nice (also remove the dated information on the front page. I found Fldigi however with google.
Did spend some time looking for Flex firewire driver others please note you can skip step 1.b. now...
Okay just got VAC 4.10 so here goes...

Wow, I actually got Fldigi and PowerSDR with a FLEX 1500 to talk - not well but at least they are talking.
Here are my update notes for "How to Configure Fldigi with PowerSDR"
1.b. Don't bother looking for Flex Firewire driver - now builtin
1.c. Google to find Fldigi as at least one of the pointers is broken
1.e. The version of VAC is 4.10 not but that may be where my problem falls - you might want to fall back to VAC 4.09 and I will try that soon to see if it make a difference
6. Run the VAC control program as administrator - otherwise it crashes when you try to add a cable
7. VSPmgr required a reboot after install in my case - also required to run as Administrator to work correctly
Keep track of what COM port you attach were as update the notes to match your settings if you can not use the ones that are supplied
10. Seems like a lot of double talk and I have problems in this area too. Note: last paragraph talks about General tab but it is really under the Options tab.
16. Look under the Configure tab for RigCAT
Be sure to change COM6 and COM7 to whatever you used in various places
I have not used fldigi before and it seems a bit tight in my window but otherwise okay. WOW I was actually able to control the FLEX 1500 from the Fldigi window and received and transmit
My current problems:
Decoding the incoming signal was poor at best - a restart of fldigi seemed to help that problem a great deal and I could actually read the PSK31 signals coming in.
Transmitting was a no go. I was sending RF as I could monitor in another HF right with no antenna attached but the signal had lots of "pops" and clicks (also reflected in the SDR window as wings flapping periodically on both sides of the "signal"). Possibly just due to overdriving FLEX but I could not get a handle on how to fix it successfully.
Overall still having problems when anything tells me to use a Driver other than Windows MME (motor boating on USB and now no luck with WDM-KS)
Running a Dell 8300 Pentium 4 3GHz with 2GB of memory with decent system performance but poor (1.0) graphics
Off to read all I can about fldigi and maybe get it to work to actually make contacts on PSK - Today's CQs got not a single reply...
Hope that helps anyone trying to get this to work...

The RX and TX problems sound like the issues observed with VAC 4.10. Try VAC 4.09
