The Yaesu FT847 and many other rigs came with a MH31 hand microphone a few years ago and most owners acquired a desk mic and set the MH31 aside as I did in 2000. After reading Tim's post, I went to my stored parts cabinet and found the original MH31 in a freezer bag which I use to store many items to prevent dust and moisture. After plugging it into my new 1500 and getting on 40 metre SSB, I found it worked excellent after checking into the East Cars Net. Bringing up the transmit equalizer allowed me to lower it's high frequency and accent the lows with perfect results. I never liked the RJ45 microphone connectors over the years but in this case it is handy to quickly be able to go from CW to SSB, keeping the microphone out of the way. After working a friend on 10 meter FM, 29.6 MHz, I was told it sounded as good or better than many other rigs on the air. If you browse on E-Bay, you will find these microphones popping up sometimes for $20 or less.

We suffer from kleptomania and sometimes have to take something for it.
