New Flex 3000 user here, having some issues with the firewire connection. I set up my Lenovo Z61t laptop (it has a built-in 4-wire firewire connection), 32-bit running Windows 7. Everything went smoothly except the PowerSDR application tended to behave erratically and freeze up when I transmitted, particularly at the higher power levels. The antenna is an unbalanced random wire so it makes sense that the problem is RF in the shack coupling into the firewire cable. I have some RFJ chokes & stacked four of them together and wrapped the computer end of the firewire cable through it four times. That seems to have eliminated the freeze-up problem, even at 100W.

Ideally though I want to use a Gateway tower in the shack to operate the Flex 3000. It's a quad-core 64-bit AMD running Vista with built-in firewire, but I can't get it to work, extra chokes or no. PowerSDR bombs out, unable to connect to the device. I take it that the built in firewire hardware is inadequate & so a firewire card is required. I see the page on recommendation for cards here:

http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50179.aspx

...but there's little mention of the 3000 specifically, except for one case that specifies "Windows 7 only."

So my question is, what's the best firewire card for the 3000 on vista?

Joe

I do not know if this will help, but here goes:

I am using F3K with 2yr. old compaq laptop and firewire card and OEM supplied firewire cable. No problems.

Also running F3K with 4 yr. old HP with onboard firewire (no pci card), same cable and it works fine also.

Running PSDR 1.18.3, Win XP pro, window line fed dipole at 30 ft., no attention paid to grounding anything.

I would take a closer look at the Gateway and make sure firewire is enabled and/or test firewire with some other device like a camera to verify that it works.

Good luck,

I am also using Vista 32-bit with a IBM T43 laptop and a four year old HP desktop: The F3K is running A okay!

The firewire card for the laptop is a generic unit with 2 ports and the desktop is a generic single port; both purchased on eBay.  I checked the one mentioned on this website and the prices where more than what I wanted to spend.
