It doesn't appear in the feature list but I thought it worth asking if the 1500 has a built-in ATU?

I have also ordered a Flex 1500 and never thought about an antenna tuner.  I do have a QRP transceiver made by Elecraft, a KX-1 which has an internal auto tuner and it's case is very small.  Am very anxious to receive this 1500 since will be using it mostly for transverter operations in the field using a laptop and of course don't need a tuner.

We suffer from kleptomania and sometimes have to take something for it.

I am looking at the 1500 as a replacement for my HF rig that has suffered a major failure. I intend to use it 95% of the time in the digital modes and I too am interested in the antenna tuner aspects with the Flex-1500. I have just started reading of on all the SDR software, features etc... so pardon my ignorance.. I do not want to ASSUME anything so I shall await any replies.. 73 Booker

If you have checked the product comparison listing it shows that only the Flex-3000 comes with an antenna tuner.  The 5000 is an option and it is unavailable for the 1500.

This is correct. You will need to use an external antenna tuning unit (ATU) with the FLEX-1500. There are a lot of QRP ATU kits available. If you get an automatic ATU, make sure it can tune with less than 5W of power.

I am interested in using a antenna tuner that "pre tunes" based on a serial output from the radio, like the cat interface ala ICOM. Since there is a serial interface in the 1500, has anyone got this to work with the many tuners (MFJ, ETC) that support this? I note that that FLEX has promised this for years?

BECAREFUL!!! That is NOT a serial port. Please download the Flex-1500 manual and read bout this port - it has DTR, etc. on the pins and NO serial data.

I use an LDG autotuner - http://www.ldgelectronics.com/c/252/products/7/29/1 and love it. Only takes a minute when you change frequency and comes in a nice enclosure.

I have used several of these tuners before; it is needed to xmit a freq to get them to tune. I am looking to tune based on the output of data from the flex. This is a "feature" that was to be supported. It would not be hard to convert the flex interface to a serial (cat) in a db-9 shell. Any idea when the factory will implement this?

Thanks,
