There are a couple of branches that refer to PAL. What does the acronym PAL stand for?

I am not sure what PAL stands for, but it is a different method of passing control signals across the Firewire cable that is supposed to be more efficient than the previous method (MIDI). It seems to reduce CPU loading a bit.. The PAL/MIDI controls streams are not the same as the digitalized audio data streams. The PAL versions of PowerSDR require compatible versions of Firewire driver (3.4.2.6300) and firmware (2.0.0.0). I don't think the new firmware is compatible with non-PAL versions of PowerSDR.

Thanks Al, for the info. From your input, I googled 1394 pal and came up with this:
"The 1394 Trade Association... announced that it has approved the WiMedia Alliance's MAC Convergence Architecture (WiMCA) as a platform for a high-speed wireless 1394 protocol adaptation layer (PAL) development. The PAL permits <snip> 1394 devices and protocols to be used in a wireless environment at speeds up to 480 Mbs <snip>." So, this seems to show us where the PAL started. From other sources I see that it operates as a layer between the application and the IEEE1394 protocol. And from what you say, replacing MIDI in our case. Because of a problem I was having with Remote Power Up and PTT keying I can confirm that the new firmware does Not work with non-PAL versions of PowerSDR. It does work "as advertised" with the latest release of firewire driver, firmware and pb-pal. It fixed my problem.
