I did an experiment with Windows 7 in a very stripped down virtual machine, and it struggled on a dual core 2 GHz system with 4G memory. Perhaps QEMU would be lighter than a full-on virtual Windows?

Eventually it will make more sense to develop a native version of PowerSDR than not... All of the "bang for buck" in the business is feeding Windows. When GNU Radio starts to surpass PSDR on FlexRadio hardware, we'll see them put out a Linux version!
RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

I've seen references in this and other threads to running PowerSDR in Linux. Can someone point me to info on how to do that- i.e. source code repository and build instructions? I'm thinking of buying a Flex 3000, and hoping I can run it native in Ubuntu. I'm also trying to get VirtualBox going, but so far I'm unable to get it to work with a raw partition pointing to my existing Windows installation. I'll try it in VB if I ever get the raw partition working, but in the meantime, I'd like to try to run it native in Ubuntu.

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

I did some more "research" on this and according to the Ubuntu website, there are firewire drivers available for Linux. So, I'm gonna give it another try. Last night I made a backup of my system (takes a long time with older drives and 71Gb) and tonight I can download and install Ubuntu 11.4 (or is it 11.04??). Knowing how Ubuntu is (isn't much different with Windoze) the updates will probably run/install all night so I can get it started and shut down the computer in the morning. It won't be 'till next week before I can get it setup to run VMPlayer 4.0 (new version) and an XP VM setup to run PSDR ....

I'll add and note when it's finished to let everyone know how it came out .....

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

I've wanted to run my desktop as a Linux host with XP (and other guest OSes) for some time with my F5KA but soon found out that without any Linux firewire drivers, Linux does not recognize the interface nor can it pass on control to the VM running PowerSDR.
I did see that as of 2 Oct, the Linux Kernel 3.1 was released with updated IEEE 1394 drivers.

Has anyone had the chance to review these yet and see if they work with the F5KA? If I had the time now I would but it would have to wait until next week or the week after.
Push come to shove, I will try these out as soon as I get my home system backed up (I run it as a VM when I have Linux on my home tower).

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

SDR offers functionality like :

Reliability , design flexibility , Consistency , Reusability.

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

It was vice-versa in my case. When I tried using virtual box it was not working but when I used SDR with Linux it was working properly.
RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

I tried SDR with Linux but it was not working then I used a virtual box and then I was able to use it.

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with 4Gb RAM and 3.1 GHZ processor and a Flex 5KA. I recently had to rebuild my system and decided to try VMware's free VMPlayer and SDR. Unfortunately, that's when I found out that the issue is the lack of a reliable FIREWIRE driver for Linux. I know that a couple of groups are working on FW drivers for Linux, however, their present function is very limited, but does work, with some "playing", for firewire drives but don't believe that the drivers are developed enough for Flex.

Has anyone experimented with the Firewire to USB drivers and has anyone seen them available for Linux.

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

OK, I have the usb issue resolved (users and groups issue discussed above) in virtualbox, now I cant get the software to recognize the radio, it will only open in demo mode, I loaded the most recent software version, followed all the setup instructions for the flex 1500, but still no luck...I wish there was more traffic here, I can see there's other out there that have run it this way successfully. I do this in VirtualBox 4.0.4 on my Dell E6510 (Core i7) running 64-bit Ubuntu-10.10 -- it works quite well. There was a minor hang-up getting the USB passthrough to work properly for me, but I just needed to be a member of the correct group with the right permissions -- after that, no problem. The performance isn't awe-inspiring, and this has mostly to do with me running 32-bit XP in a VM on a system with perhaps not the ideal amount of RAM... It wasn't really supposed to be awe-inspiring, it was just supposed to work, and it did so as intended.

Cheers,

N5BJL

(Using a Flex-1500 -- in Linux!)

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux
N4CVX (1/19/2011)
I'm a Linux user since 1999 and now use Ubuntu. In Ubuntu 10.10 and latest version of VirtualBox hosting Windows 7 I have a very stable system. Granted, my Linux workstation runs with 8GB of RAM and a dual 2TB RAID. Everything appears seamless. The only issue I have is that very occasionally when Win7 goes to screen saver, it will lose the USB port. That is, the USB port is still visible in the VirtualBox pulldown menu, but the box is no longer "x'ed" on so I have to click it back. I've worked with VMware and find it lacking in stability versus VirtualBox, so after runing a test bed system with VMWare and Virtual Box running in multiple windows each running WinXP/3 aand Win7, the VirtualBox Open Source application seems much more stable. YMMV. My next project is to run the system 24/7 on WinMore. 73's de Dave N4CVX
I've done some more tinkering with my VirtualBox(s) and tried running PowerSDR on my Windows XP (SP3) virtual machine. Now there is no problem "forgetting" the virtual USB ports. I blew away the Windows 7 stuff and now run my digital radio apps on the WinXP VirtualBox. No problems. :)

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

I'm a Linux user since 1999 and now use Ubuntu. Any suggestion.
I'm sure hoping, also, that PowerSDR 2.x will eventually be ported to Linux. I have a Flex 1500 - and right now the ONLY way I can run PowerSDR on linux is via VMWare with their latest free VMPlayer.

I can run a WinXP Pro virtual machine in VMWare and use the MME drivers for the main audio AND the VAC audio too and get PSDR 2.08 running with FLDigi.

I works only fair and is fragile. IF I run anything else, either in the VM or in Linux while it is running - then I start to get audio dropouts.

Also, putting my mouse over the filter area on the panadaptor makes the mouse cursor jump around eratically - probably because the filter area is getting updated a lot more than the area outside the filter.

However, IF I don't run anything else and be careful I actually can run the 1500 and make contacts in the virtual machine running in Linux.

Perhaps if I had more memory - I only have 2gb RAM and give the VM half of that - perhaps it would not be so apt to have dropouts when I start something else.

VirtualBox, an open source native VM player does NOT work out at all. PSDR will run but the audio is terrible and unusuable for any mode. Tried a bunch of things but no luck with VirtualBox.

And, as we all know, the only real way to go is a have a completely native version of PSDR for Linux O.S. I suspect it may be a long time until that happens if ever.

Incidentally, I run Ubuntu 9.10 on the desktop and the netbook as my main O.S. Also have it on 2 other desktops too.

---Gary WB8ROL

RE: Power SDR Software Via Linux

FlexRadio Systems provides world-class software defined radio technology for amateur and commercial markets.
